Cat Urine Odor Removal. Home remedy methods to Clean Cat Urine Smell

There is nothing worse than the pungent smell of cat urine and people find it very hard to get rid of the odor. There are commercial products available which claim to remove urine odors at the source These usually fall into three categories, antibacterial, enzymatic and chemical cleaners. I have read many reviews on these products and some work better than others but it can become a bit expensive if you use the trial and error method searching for the cat urine removal product that works for you.

There are also several home remedy recipes which I have found on the Internet which people claim are successful for removing cat urine smell and I will list them here. Vinegar seems to appear as a remedy very often.

Remove the cat urine by blottingBlot the Cat or Dog Urine First
When using any home made recipes it is important to first remove as much of the cat urine as possible especially from carpets and rugs. If the urine is still wet then you need to blot up as much of the wetness that you can.

Place paper towels over the cat urine and tread on the paper towel until you absorb as much as the urine as possible. Repeat with  dry towels until no more moisture can be absorbed.

Vinegar, Baking Soda, Detergent & Hydrogen Peroxide.
This is the BEST recipe. It really WORKS!

White Vinegar and water

Mix two parts of water with one part white vinegar. Pour small amounts at a time over the affected area and work in well with a clean cloth. Blot (As described above) and repeat several times. Allow to dry and repeat if necessary. You will need to dilute the cat urine as much as possible. Vinegar will neutralize the ammonia in the cat urine.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Follow the directions above. Blot and dry. Use a fan to help the drying process. When the area is dry sprinkle a liberal amount of baking soda over the area. Add a couple of teaspoons of dishwashing detergent and mix into a paste over the area. Work it into the carpet and then allow to dry and then vacuum.

Enzyme Laundry Detergent

Wash the area with a laundry detergent that contains enzymes such as Bio-Zet or Tide. Blot and dry.

Steam Extraction Cleaners

To clean old or heavy stains in carpeting you can hire a steam cleaner to extract the urine from the carpet. Do not use chemicals, just keep diluting the cat urine with clean water.

Tips to clean cat urine stains from hardwood floors:

Remove any excrement and blot the entire wet area immediately and firmly with paper towels. Wash affected area several times with white vinegar. Rinse stain thoroughly with warm water. Blot dry with paper towels. Apply a specialized stain and odor-removing bacteria or enzyme cleaner. Tip: Read the instructions carefully before using these products and test them in an invisible area. If you can not remove some old stains, try sanding away the stain and resealing the wood.

Ammonia

It has been said NOT to use ammonia based products to clean pet urine. To pets, ammonia smells like pee and attracts them back to that area to re-offend.
