He is adorable! It looks like there is some Siamese mixed in there with the markings on his ears and feet.

Hello Shanmar, this is indeed interesting. If you are still on this forum please let us know whether his colouring has remained so, or changed. In Russian Whites, it is known that white kittens are mostly born with blue marks, which later disappear. But in Blacks? My only explanation is that your kitten has a recessive gene for Black, which is extremely rare in Russians and most likely an unforeseeable mutation.
Here you can find a good overview of the genetics of Russians in terms of colour: http://www.riverlightrussians.com/rgenetics.html -------------------- Breeder of Russian Blues and Whites in SA

Doesnt look like the original poster has been back on this board since the end of Dec 2008... so its unlikely we will get any further answers about the coat of this baby

doing a search on fever coat, there is a kitten pictured that looks very similar to the one shown, with a shot of the adult coat - fever coat appears to be a temporary change in hair follicle colour from the mum being sick during pregnancy - it is not a genotype change (sorry CF to shoot your mutation theory), and alters when the adult coat comes through
linky CF - those genetics that you describe there aren't just for Russians that is how black and blue work. If you want a good explanation of all the different genetics, Robinsons book is the bible. |
