Hi Everyone,

I posted this on another cat forum, so sorry if people on multiple forums read this again lol I just like to get as many opinions as i can, I love hearings everyones views on stuff angelic.gif

I was just browsing my local pet classifieds, and came across an ad that stated the following:

"I have 7 kittens just starting to eat on there own so they will be ready in a few days.
i have 2 orange 1 orange and white, one black with orange patch on face and 3 dark grey with black spots and stripes and some white on face, very cute, fluffy and very playful when they overcome there shyness. i will be selling then for $50 ea.

text me on XXX
will not accept calls"

This concerns me.... sleepy.gif sleepy.gif

When I read ads like this I really wish there was something I could do I wish i could call them and say.. Hey, I'll take all of them providing you keep them untill they are 12 weeks old, then i would get them all desexed vaccinated wormed and rehomed

I very much wish I could afford to do that. This is just a general rant really, Its just sad seeing little kittens being taken away from there mothers much much too early like this.

Thanks for listening angelic.gif

What a weird and rather amateur advertisement...they're only just starting to eat by themselves...they must be very young...shame they are not in Victoria, then she would have to keep them at least til they were old enough to microchip before selling.

Just because they should, doesn't mean they will. The average moggie owner probably doesn't even know that rule

It's sad that little ones are leaving their mum so early, you can if you've got time try and gently let them know that kittens should stay with mum for at least 10-12 weeks, that there's more to weaning than just starting on solids for a few days.

Thats a good idea actually. What would be a tactful way to say that? I'm horrible with tact sometimes haha. From the way that ad is worded though, I kinda get the feeling that no matter how I word this text, I dont think the response will be kind....hmmm her wording seems kind of abrubt to me, thats just how I read it anyways...

I thought that too... I don't know why but for some reason where she says NO CALLS only messages, just seems weird to me. hmmm

I would send a message and tell this person exactly what I think of him/her. I think as long as you keep calm, watch your language (not that there's any law against profanity, but you don't want to seem like you are stooping to this person's level, which is pretty low) it's better just to state the facts and how you feel. The really worrying thing is that these kittens, unless somehow saved by a rescue, will probably be sold to people as stupid and ignorant as the advertiser - and we'll have another bunch of traumatised kittens, taken from their mother too soon, not neutered, not vaccinated, not microchipped......and so the cycle will keep repeating. i.gif ?? x.gif

I Agree, its horrible to think about...A woman on another forum was telling me that when she see's ads like that from people having accidental kittens and just wanting to get rid of them she calls them and tells them that she will take all of the kittens and will sign to it providing they stay with thier mother untill 12 weeks old, and that they promise to get the mother desexed, and then she gets all the vet work done and rehomes them :) apparently sometimes vets will give u discounts if you are doing foster care/ animal welfare work,.. I wish i could do that :(

Sorry for not replying before now, got sidetracked.

I sent another text asking the age of the kittens. Reply was "six week".

Unless advertising media make it compulsory for advertisers to not sell pets before a certain age there is nothing that can be done to stop people selling under age animals.

Six weeks isn't too bad. I got a kitten that was probably that age and she lived until she was almost 21, she was free. I of course had her desexed and she got the necessary vet treatment that only amounted to her yearly vaccination and health check. I suppose she was just one of those very 'special cats', that I have owned and now own.

Hey Serena, thanks for sussing out what was what.
6 weeks is young, but not as young as I was envisioning them to be.
I hope they all went to good people.

8 weeks isn't too bad (though far from ideal), 6 weeks is horrendous. Poor little ones

I totally agree
6 weeks is WAY too young for a kitten to leave! Kittens are still dependant on both Mum & siblings to learn the correct way of cat interaction until 10-12wks minimum

mmmm I agree. Thanks Serena! good investigation skills haha. I was envisioning around 4 weeks so it could have been alot worse. In saying that, 6 weeks is still a pretty horrible time for a kitten to leave its mum :( Wish there was more we could do. I hope they atleast went to nice loving homes
