Good morning,
I am writing to you today as i am hoping you could give me some insight to a situation i am having involving a cat approx 1 year old living in sydney. Very recently i was living a share house, residing in this house is a pet cat. This cat was originally owned by a previous tenant who left the cat behind. The cat then belonged to nobody but remained in the house. Shortly after my room mate claimed the cat as his own. Once he made this "claim" i noticed the cat was not being fed, nor being provided with water or any attention whatsoever. I am a cat lover, so i basically looked after the cat myself. i would buy it food, make sure it was fed and had water and i gave it an endless amount of attention, i can confidently say this cat loved me and depended on me and did not feel the same way about the other people in the house who she was ignored by. this cat followed me everywhere (even tried following me to shops on numerous occasions), she slept on my bed, she'd wake me up when my alarm went off and we played constantly. all the while this cat was still "claimed" by my other room mate who was neglecting it. Very rarely would he buy cat food, the main reason for the cats starvation was his laziness and him not wanting to part with any money. Possibly once a week he would put biscuits in the cats bowl which she would never eat, because of this the bowl would remain full for a few days and he'd see no need to feed her again even though she would go days without eating, in most cases thier dog would steal the cats food aswell. about two months ago the cat became pregnant, this was due to the fact he never wanted to pay for desexing and this cat roams the street day and night looking for food due to its hunger. once it was apparent she was pregnant, no one in the house wanted to deal with kittens. The option of killing the kittens or dumping the cat was high up on thier possibility list on what should be done about the situation. In the end, when the cat was one week away from birthing he decided it was best to get her an abortion, which was quite sad as all her motherly instincts were kicking in and she was preparing for thier birth. After the operation the cat was miserable for a few weeks and was on pain killers. The "owner" did not feed these to the cat in a logical way. he would force her jaw open and put all his fingers down her throat almost choking her each time. As surprising as it is that he bothered to give her the pain killers, i feel he only bothered because it found enjoyment in the cruel manner of medicating her. it also seemed to find it hilarious when the dog would attack the cat and generally frighten her. After the abortion, her hormones were still not settled so her weight would fluctuate. The "owner" felt it was time to put her on a diet, his method of dieting this cat was by not feeding her at all till the weight dropped. i specifically recall one occasion where my boyfriend fed her because she was starving and we were both yelled at and told not to feed the cat. this cat also has worms and would become very thirsty but there would be no water for her to drink. the only reason this cat is still alive is because i would take it upon myself to look after her. I would take her up to my room and feed her and give her water to ensure she wouldnt die and i wouldnt get yelled at and abused for feeding her. i would also play with her for literally hours on end as she was still only a baby and has a lot of energy. I also bought her a collar, as she spent alot of time roaming the streets and i didnt want someone to think she was a stray. the "owner" threw out my collar as he thought it was rude of me to buy the cat a collar, even though he wouldnt part with a cent to do so. I moved out this house on monday and i am terrified about the welfare of this cat and i know it misses me and depends on me. She actually got in a box in the van when i was moving. the room mates called me and asked if i'd seen her and i said yes i have her here, you can come and get her but not this evening as im still busy moving. He called the police on me and took the cat back- the people in that house are actually horrible people with malicious intent towards animals and people, hence me moving out. he didn't call the police because he cared about the cat, if anything the cat is a burden to him I feel this cat is actually mine and needs me. when i had her at my new place for a few hours i have never seen her happier. I really want this cat and would like to know if there is any grounding on which she could rightfully be mine. She is practically a stray roaming the streets and i feel i am the true owner. I am very worried about her going missing due to her confusing of my whereabouts and the fact she's been moved around a bit the past two days due to sneaking into the moving van and then being taken back. She also sits in the middle of the road and the house she lives in is next to a pub and drunk people come past and taunt her, scare her on purpose and one someone even tried grabbing her. Can anything be done? is there any form of legal grounding, or anything the rspa or similar place can do to help me? This can not be talked over with the "owner". he is difficult, selfish and mean. If anything, if he knows im interested in having the cat the more likely he will refuse giving her to me. every day im away from her is another day she hasnt been fed and i am very upset about this. I can just imagine her waiting for me to come back, or her going into my old room and none of my stuff being there for her. Please help. |

That sounds a horrible situation for you and the cat. I just wonder if you live in a State where micro-chipping is mandatory - like NSW. If she is not chipped then technically she has no owner.........
Have you thought about telling your story to someone at the AWL or the RSPCA. You could possibly get their assistance in rescuing her and offer to give her a home. I imagine she has been desexed when the kittens were aborted and might be chipped but you would need to make a formal complaint if they were to pursue cruelty. If she was chipped when she was desexed then this man legally owns her and I don't see any recourse for acquiring her legally.....perhaps one day when she is roaming the streets she might just disappear....I can't think of anything else to suggest. |

What a sad situation, and surprising that a vet would perform such a late term abortion.
I would be at the very least reporting the abuse/neglect to the RSPCA or AWL. Agree with above, the cat could just "disappear" when out wandering one day... |
