Hello all

I would like to know if there are any differences in temperament between the 4 breeds. From reading about them it appears not or very little. But what do you lovely cat enthusiasts think?

I love their looks and one day hope to get 2 of ?? Can't decide :)

Thank you in advance.

Hi,
I breed all of these breeds and find them to be very similar. Some might not agree but I do find that the Balinese are a bit more mischevious but also a bit quiter. a.gif a.gif

Well....I am a self confessed Siamese/Oriental/Devon addict, one of my friends has Balinese...the Balinese is significantly quieter than the others, but the temperament of all these breeds is almost identical. Before I bought my first Oriental and Devon I thought there were no breeds like the Siamese. Now I would never even think to choose which one to have, because I simply would not be able to - I will never be without a Siamese, Oriental and Devon Rex. I would like to have a Balinese and a Javanese too, but the long hair puts me off. I prefer short hair cats.

If you like lap cats and cats who want to be always around you and on you, you will LOVE any of these breeds you have asked about. They are like adorable children who are full of beens but you can NEVER be angry with them no matter what they do. They are full of character and are loyal til the end.

Why not have one of each breed? And I have to tell you something: you will miss out if you do not buy at least one of Dee's (Deanicko cattery)Orientals or Siamese, I have one of her Orientals here (he is absolutely everyone's favourite along with the Devon), others from COA have too her Orientals and Siamese: we all agree her cats are super special natured little darlings. She is expert indeed in breeding them soooo very beautiful natured and super healthy! just a suggestion of course. I am truly biased, because my Thai (brown smoke Oriental) is our blessing from the Heavens! I have an other Oriental too - Legend, who is more shy with strangers but super affectionate and loyal, he is a silver spotted Oriental. I adore him too, and I am his number one human in the house, LOL.

I better stop rambling. I adore my cats, you better do not ask me about them, because then you cannot stop me, especially when it comes about Siamese, Orientals or Devon Rexes...they are absolutely addictive.

Just a note: as I am typing here, my Siamese Cyam sleeps on my lap, Siamese Tiffany is on the desk in front of me with her front legs on my left arm (so I cannot move that arm), Legend the Oriental is behind me on the chair on the sheep skin I put there for the cats' comfort. The other Oriental went to bed with my OH and the Devon is in my daughter's bed...this is what you can expect ones you have these breeds...

I agree with Marianna ..... I have a Siamese, a Balinese and 2 Orientals! The Balinese is the quieter of the 4 and he is the only male, but he certainly keeps them all in check. He is so loving and very very gentle. My Siamese is an old style one - I don't know if they are different in temperament - she is not very loud as she is very crossed eyed and has no periphial (sp?) vision. She likes to spend her time on our bed or very close by. Now the 2 Orientals - well what can I say??? They are live wires. One of mine is also from Dee (highly recommend her too smile.gif ) and they make me laugh all the time. I too cannot envisage living without at least a few of this fantastic breed smile.gif

Hi, I'm so glad you asked this question as I am in the same predicament. Annie, your replie was wonderful and your photos are beautiful. I am in the process of deciding which of these breeds I would like. I have a part siamese boy (Martin) who I ABSOLUTELY adore. From what I understand of these breeds (and Annies reply confirms it), he has that typical siamese attitude. Whatever room I am in, he is there with me. He is always in the thick of the action!! It is because of him, that I have decided that I want this same attitude and would be disappointed with anything less. However, I just can't decide between the siamese or the oriental....and true, the Devon Rex has entered my mind. I just love the colours of the oriental, especially the black silver or blue silver classic tabby....... but the blue eyes of the siamese are bewitching.
............. I just cant decide !!!!!!
I think the only way to solve it is to buy one of each at the same time so they grow up together. Urgghhhh ??

Yes, that is exactly what I like :)

I too prefer shorthaired cats but thought that the balinese & javanese are more of a medium haired cat. They don't seem to come anywhere close to the likes of a persian cat - or am I mistaken? I haven't seen them in "person".

Hi Skye,
The Balinese and Javanese are semi longhaired and require no special care. They do not knot or matter at all and have a very easy care coat. I find that they do not shed any more then the Siamese and Oriental and in fact I feel that they don't shed as much. You should do yourself a favour and try to get to a show and have a look. I am in love with them and they are so pretty.
Thank you Maraianna and Eleanor you make me blush dd.gif dd.gif dd.gif dd.gif signgiggle.gif

Dee, you really deserve every praise! Bias has nothing to do with that. Your work talks for itself.

That red point Siamese kitten is beautiful! I also like your Balinese mum with the baby...all you cats and kittens are just so beautiful and happy looking!

I breed all these as well as the Foreign White (both Shorthair & Longhair). They are all a Siamese breed, just with variations in coat colour and pattern & length and also eye colour. Same cat, different overcoat.
Some (not all!) of the longhairs are quieter than the shorthairs but basically they are all the same cat in a different overcoat, with the physical structure being identical in all these breeds, although the longer coat tends to give Balinese & Javanese a softer, less angular apearance.
Dee is absolutely correct re. the coat and the shedding.
I have Balinese and Javanese (Oriental Longhair) kittens at the moment, as well as some shorthair Siamese and Orientals.
There is a huge range of colours and patterns these days.
The coat should be a single, silky coat that lies flat, with a plumed tail and feathering on the britches. It is not a long coat at all and should not be fluffy or thick, although this tends to sometimes occur in kittens that are of heavier boning and less extreme (non show quality) type.

Heather, our friends who have the Balinese have a very quiet one. They have a Burmese from me and two Malltese cross dogs. The Balinese is very cute and affectionate and calm too, she does not want to cross the fences either.

How do these breeds compare to an Abysinian or a bengal...I have only had these brees and are looking for a similar fun cat that maybe doesnt go out and venture so much and get run over etc...anyone know if these breeds are likely to venture less and stay close to home.

Wow, Skye has so much information now, lucky girl, and we obviously have a lot of enthusiasts for these breeds. Dee, your cats are just gorgeous, and that little red point is SO pretty. Annie, the seal point? Siamese cat pictured in your atavar is very handsome, so I DO hope it is a male!! j.gif Male or female, that cat is eyecatching, to say the least. And last but not least (and sorry I've forgotten the lady's name), the picture of the cat stretched out in its basket - is that an Oriental?

I'm almost glad I can't have any more cats at the moment, with so many beautiful pedigree breeds, and then so many moggies who desperately need a home, how could I choose? t.gif

Charlotte, any cat who goes out can get into trouble ,dogs ,cars other cats ..I actually like to give my cats an enclosure to play in ..and access from the house to the enclosure ..they seem pretty happy with it ..and I know they are safe ..it might sound like it will cost a bit ..but compared to vet bills..well it's a better option ..others like to cat proof a large part of their yard.
