Hi I am the owner of a female cat who is white with a tortoiseshell tail and a couple of spots on her head, her name is Brandy and she isnt a special breed or anything (that we know of) and she recently had a litter of 4 kittens. 1 female blue cream and white 1 male ginger and white 1 male black and white and unusually 1 male tortoishell and im just wondering exactly how rare these male torties are as I have heard conflicting stories about them. Anyone that could help with some info would be great Thanks...

Hi Demzelza, welcome to COA
I would love to see pics of the kitten you have! Some males dont have enough actual 'tortoishell on them to be a 'real' torti, so the pic would help!

I have a male tortoiseshell domestic and altho it is 'rare' there are a few issues you need to keep in mind.

If it is a genetic abnormality. there is a potential for the kitten to not have a long life due to the issues that come along with it. i will look up the correct term for you...it escapes me for now.

If it is just a colour abnormality, then he is something to be enjoyed as a wonderful desexed pet, as he isnt any particular breed. I do hope you are getting Mum desexed soon, too.

Ok...found some links for you to have a look at with some great info in them :)

Wow, what a cutie he is! I've always thought tortie meant female, but he definitely looks like a tortie to me! Even more rare than a ginger female!

Cheers,
